چکیده

Patients 1121 patients (mean age 57 y, 64% men) who had ≥ 1 of the following: ≥ 1 histologically confirmed colorectal adenoma removed < 3 months before recruitment; ≥ 1 histologically confirmed adenoma removed ≤ 16 months before recruitment and a lifetime history of ≥ 2 confirmed adenomas; or a histologically confirmed adenoma ≥ 1 cm in diameter removed < 16 months before recruitment. Exclusion criteria included a history of a familial colorectal cancer syndrome, invasive colorectal cancer, and malabsorption syndromes. Follow up was 97%.

Interaction of calcium supplementation and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and the risk of colorectal adenomas.

BACKGROUND Calcium and aspirin have both been found to be chemopreventive against colorectal neoplasia. However, the joint effect of the two agents has not been well investigated. METHODS To explore the separate and joint effects of calcium and aspirin/nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), we used data from two large randomized clinical trials among patients with a recent history of c...

Alternate-day, low-dose aspirin and cancer risk.

Most apparent medical discoveries are not subsequently confirmed, and reports of unexpected benefits of established treatments are particularly prone to being disproved. It is noteworthy, therefore, that the aspirin and cancer prevention story continues to stand up to testing, with the latest report from the Women’s Health Study (WHS) in this issue (1) confirming previous observations and offer...

Ornithine decarboxylase polymorphism modification of response to aspirin treatment for colorectal adenoma prevention.

BACKGROUND Previous research suggests that the G315A single-nucleotide polymorphism in the ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) gene may be a genetic marker for risk of colorectal neoplasia and may also modify the association of aspirin use with risk. METHODS We tested these hypotheses among participants in the Aspirin/Folate Polyp Prevention Study who were randomly assigned to placebo or to aspirin...

Long-term effect of aspirin on colorectal cancer incidence and mortality: 20-year follow-up of five randomised trials.

BACKGROUND High-dose aspirin (≥500 mg daily) reduces long-term incidence of colorectal cancer, but adverse effects might limit its potential for long-term prevention. The long-term effectiveness of lower doses (75-300 mg daily) is unknown. We assessed the effects of aspirin on incidence and mortality due to colorectal cancer in relation to dose, duration of treatment, and site of tumour. METH...
